Emergency Medical Responder
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certificate program prepares students with first aid training in providing emergency responses. This training is recognized by the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics.
The course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for firefighters, law enforcement, emergency medical service personnel, etc. in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until the next level of health care personnel takes over.
Course Info
EMR is a three-week program with week one in home study followed by two weeks of lectures and labs on campus.
Students will be required to do 20 to 30 hours of pre-study before participating in the two-week program. The lab courses are taught and evaluated in classroom, lab, and practicum experiences.

The EMR course provides candidates with foundational knowledge in human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology; supporting further learning and development in health science.
The course equips you with the necessary skills to gain employment in a broad-range of areas, including: ambulance services, fire departments, police, ski patrol, lifeguarding, search and rescue, occupational first-aid, and military.
Admission Requirements
- OHS Standard First Aid with CPR C or HCP C – Preferably taken within 6 months from the start of the program. A copy of your valid First Aid certificate must be provided prior to course start date.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Personal and physical suitability.
- Good reading, writing, and comprehension are recommended skills.
- Suitability for working in this field, emotional maturity, stability, and patience are recommended qualities, as well as good physical condition.
