Part-Time Firefighter training in Saskatchewan

If attending school full-time is not an option for you, you can complete your 1001 designation by taking the training part-time (one course at a time) in Saskatchewan. Parkland College can offer the training to kick start this career. Our part-time program is also beneficial for municipal students interested in taking individual NFPA 1001 courses in Saskatchewan.

Our program curriculum, provided in cooperation with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, meets or exceeds National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements including more practice runs and hands-on activities.

The Firefighter Training Program is offered at Parkland College in a full-time 14-week block.

Why Parkland College?

Our training meets or exceeds the National Fire Protection Associate (NFPA) 1001 Professional Firefighter Qualifications.

Graduates who complete the entire 1001 program will be eligible for IFSAC certifications in:

  • NFPA 1001 – Professional Firefighter Qualifications Level II (including Level I)
  • NFPA 1072 – Dangerous Goods First Responder – Awareness/Operations Levels
  • NFPA 1002 – Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator with Pump
Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

Due to the nature of the firefighter profession, additional screening criteria may apply prior to final acceptance in the program.
  • Grade 12 with a minimum of 50% in: English A30 and English B30; Any grade 11 Science and one of Math Foundations 20, Workplace and Apprenticeship Math 20 or Pre-Calculus 20
  • English language requirement
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Medical suitability (assessment and questionnaire completed by a General Practitioner)

Important Notes:

  • You must exhibit physical strength and fitness consistent with the requirements of professional practice.
  • You will participate in training programs which includes swimming.

NFPA 1001 is widely endorsed as a necessary credential for new hires. If you are seeking a position as a career firefighter or want to gain knowledge and practice, this program can give you the competitive edge.

Career Opportunities

NFPA 1001 training provides the basic training required for many industrial safety positions, and the starting program for a full time firefighter career.

For full time positions, additional training will be required in the firefighting areas in addition to emergency medical training. Each full time municipal fire department has its own requirements to be considered for employment. Demand for this training at industrial sites is expected to expand as the province continues to grow.
